Today on March 25th of this year marks the Hindu festival Holi, which celebrates the deities Krishna and Radha.
Holi, known as the Festival of Colors, Love, and Spring, is one of the brightest and liveliest holidays, including a tradition of smearing colored powders and colored water on each other to symbolize the vibrancy and diversity of life.
In Hinduism, Radha (pronounced “RAH-da”) is the goddess of love, tenderness, compassion, and devotion — wonderful qualities to bestow upon a daughter.
Holi celebrates the love story between the goddess Radha and her husband, the god Krishna. The splashes of color common in Holi festivities are said to represent the immortal love of the couple.
A longtime popular girl’s name across the Indian subcontinent, Radha was given to only 17 baby girls in the US last year. The goddess’s alternative name, Radhika (pronounced “RAH-dih-ka”) was given to an additional 10 babies.
