Bernard Rich, better known as Buddy, was an American jazz drummer and bandleader, who died on April 2, 1987.
Taking up the drums at just 2 years old, Buddy Rich went on to become one of the most influential drummers of all time. Alongside creating his own band, The Buddy Rich Big Band, he also worked with many jazz legends including Harry James, Frank Sinatra, and Bunny Berigan.
His seemingly effortless precision and speed when playing still remains a standard that aspiring drummers hope to reach.
The name Buddy means ‘friend’ and likely started life in the nursery, as a child’s attempt at saying ‘brother’. It has been used to refer to a companion since the late 18th century and went on to join the ranks of Sonny, Buzz, and Chuck as a cool, playful nickname option.
While Buddy has rarely been used as a given name, current trends are making some parents reconsider. Celebrity chefs, Jamie and Jools Oliver, chose Buddy Bear Maurice for their son, while singer and authors, Tom and Giovanna Fletcher, selected Buddy Bob for theirs.
In the UK, Buddy currently ranks in the Top 500, and fits right in with other rising stars, such as Teddy, Reggie, and Artie.
Whether you think it deserves a moment in the spotlight or would be better saved for a puppy, Buddy has friendly charm and a musical feel.
