Nathaniel Adams Coles — known professionally by his stage name Nat King Cole — passed away on February 15, 1965 at the age of 45.
Along with being a renowned singer, jazz pianist, and actor, Cole would become the first Black American to host a nationally broadcast television show — The Nat King Cole Show.
Nat’s stage name was inspired by the British nursery rhyme, Old King Cole.
Cole is an English name meaning “coal black”, also associated with another musician — composer Cole Porter.
Cole made the US Top 100 from 1997 until 2010, but has since been surpassed by the longer form Colton. Cole is currently most popular in Scotland at #72.
Aside from Colton, other long forms include Colson, Colter, Colby, and another Black History name — Coleman, as in Bessie Coleman or Coleman Young.
