Romy
Diminutive of Rosemary or Rome-related names such as Roma, Botanical name or "Rome"
Like many people, I first encountered the name Romy as a real-life possibility in the wonderful film (and now play) Romy & Michelle’s High School Reunion. Before that, I thought of Romy as a unique celebrity name, via German-French actress Romy Schneider, born Rosemarie.
Romy has always been a Nameberry favorite, but it’s only in the past few years that Romy has taken off in the US. Used for 285 baby girls — and 25 boys — in 2024, it was one of the fastest-rising names of the year, entering the Top 1000 for the first time. Another 253 baby girls were named Romi, 99 named Romee, 45 called Romie, and 25 named Romey, vaulting the name under its collective spellings into the Top 500.
Credit the new fashion for all names Rome-related, including Roman, Romeo, Rome, Romilly, and so on. We see this as a branch of the super-popular names from Ancient Rome, which include names that have survived from that time, such as Augustus and Justus, along with Roman mythology names such as Luna and Aurora.

Yes, I’ve always associated the name Romy with Romy Schneider
I absolutely love the name Romy! I just wish it weren’t so common!! I know a few girls my age named Romy, and a friend of mine just named her baby Romy too. I’d love to use it myself, but it feels like I can’t.
