Océane
French, "ocean"
Elegant, beachy, and stylish all at the same time, Océane is a French nature name that once featured in the Top 10 in its native France back in the 2000s. Pronounced as AW-SEH-AN (or O-SAY-AN), it is familiar in Quebec and Belgium too. Today, Nameberry Guest Writer Katie shares what she loves about Océane:
“It’s a beautiful French girl that name I don’t hear often but it fulfils lots of briefs: an ‘O’ girls name, a nautical and nature inspired name, and being French but recognisable to English speakers. I think Océane is ripe for the picking! It has such a soft, beautiful sound with a chic French edge.
I came across this name for the first time actually in Ireland in 2014, in a tiny bakery in a little village, I spotted a beautiful cake for a lucky Océane who must have been visiting for her 4th birthday and have remembered it ever since.”

The name on my birth certificate is Oceana! Pronounced like Ocean with an ahhh on the end- I was told by my father I was named after a beautiful African woman with a jewel in her nose, who lived in their building in NYC. My mother changed my name to the Yiddish Shana (Shay-nuh) when I was 5.
