Juliana Louise Emma Marie Wilhelmina — who held the title of Queen of the Netherlands for 32 years — passed away on March 20, 2004.
Juliana ascended to the throne in 1948, and during her reign was loved by many for her informal manner and passion for various social issues. Juliana abdicated the throne in 1980, passing the title on to her daughter, Beatrix.
The name Juliana is of Latin origin, derived from the the Ancient Roman names Julius, Julia, and their successor Julian.
The origin and meaning of the family of names is disputed. They may stem from the Latin iuvenis, meaning “youthful”, Greek ioulos meaning “downy-bearded”, or Jovis — a variation of the god Jupiter meaning “sky father.”
Whatever the origin, Juliana and her sister spelling Julianna are regal, feminine, and oh-so-classy, with a long history of popularity across Europe.
