Author Eudora Alice Welty was born on April 13, 1908 in Jackson, Mississippi.
Eudora’s novel, The Optimist’s Daughter, won the Pulitzer prize in 1973, and she was also notably the first living author to have her works published in Library of America.
Eudora is a Greek name meaning “generous gift”, and is held by three separate minor goddesses in Greek mythology. These include a water nymph, a Nereid of sailing and fishing, one of the sister nymphs who form the cluster of stars called the Hyades.
The name has charted in the US as far back as 1880, but fell off for good in 1924. While Dora may still be out exploring for the time being, other elaborations such as Isadora, Dorothy, and Theodora are newly stylish again.
Eudora has a quaint vintage charm, a lovely literary namesake, and is wonderfully rare — given to only 12 baby girls in the US at last count.
