March 12 is the anniversary of the first Broadway performance of Les Misérables and today’s name is inspired by the musical’s heroine, Cosette.
Often used as a poster child for the show, Cosette is mistreated and kept as a servant by her cruel guardians. Despite this tough start in life, she remains hopeful, singing of “Castles in The Clouds” and a future when life will be better.
Based on the novel by Victor Hugo and set against the backdrop of social unrest in 19th-century Paris, Les Misérables is a favorite among musical fans. It has been performed in 42 different countries and translated into 21 different languages, making Cosette an excellent and inspired namesake.
Cosette is a literary invention of Victor Hugo’s, thought to be either a twist on Colette or taken from the French word chosette meaning ‘little thing’. While it is a nickname in the novel, Cosette has been used as a full name in the US since the early 20th century and in the last decade, it has been given to around 100 girls each year.
Reminiscent of classic Josephine (or more literally the French pet form Josette), similar to stylish Juliet, and with a hint of powerful Cosima, Cosette could make an offbeat-but-familiar choice for a baby today. It’s bright and zippy and offers a range of nicknames, from cottagecore Cosy to vintage Etta.
For more Les Mis inspired choices, you could also consider Marius, Eponine, Jean, or Hugo.
