Sadie
In 1934, the comic strip Li'l Abner introduced a folk tradition that quickly became a fan-favorite in American culture: Sadie Hawkins Day. Every year on November 13, dances were held across the country with an unconventional twist (for the time) — girls were the ones asking boys to the dance.
In the classic comic, 35-year-old Sadie Hawkins is anxiously waiting for suitors. Out of desperation, her father (the mayor) organized a foot race for all of the eligible bachelors in the town, with a catch (literally). If Sadie caught one of the racers, he was forced to marry her.
This silly (though a tad misogynistic) story still has a hold on the country today, with many schools still holding an annual Sadie Hawkins dance.
The name Sadie, which was popular in the late 1800s, has made a major comeback in the last few decades. Peaking at its highest rank ever in 2014 at #46, this sassy Sarah diminutive is now at #68.
And a musical reference — the Beatles song, Sexy Sadie.
I've always liked the name Sadie. And when I was in High School (Graduated 1976) we had a Sadie Hawkins day dance every year.
