Oprah:
Talk show host, author, producer, and worldwide sensation Orpah Gail Winfrey was born on January 29, 1954 in Mississippi.
Winfrey’s accomplishments throughout her career were revolutionary, including being the richest African-American person of the entire 20th century, as well as at one point in time the world’s only Black billionaire.
In case you missed the minor spelling difference, she was in fact born Orpah and not Oprah.
Oprah was given the name Orpah — meaning “a fawn” in Hebrew — after a biblical figure in the Book of Ruth. After consistent mispronunciations and misspellings, “Oprah” stuck.
It is this backstory that solidifies Oprah as a one-woman name — existing only for and because of Winfrey. The name Oprah reached its small peak in the 80s (right around the time The Oprah Winfrey Show was created), given to 37 baby girls in one year.
