Mary Stuart, also known as Mary, Queen of Scots, died on February 8, 1587. The only surviving child James V of Scotland, Mary inherited the throne at a mere 6 days old with her father’s passing.
Mary remained Queen until her forced abdication in 1567. After her husband (Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley) was found strangled in his garden, it was not received well when Mary married the chief suspect of the murder just three months later.
Mary fled to England in hope of refuge but was instead held prisoner by Queen Elizabeth for the next 19 years.
While Mary, Queen of Scots may be a rather scandalous namesake, Mary is such a timeless and well-used name that it escapes any ramifications of this association.
Mary has several possible origins and meanings, which you can read more about in this fascinating blog post. Mary held the title of #1 girl’s name until the mid-20th century due to its ties to the Virgin Mary in Christianity.
Variations Maria, Marie, Maryam, Miriam, and many many more have been popular across the globe for just as long if not longer. Not to mention a plethora of diminutives and spin-offs, from Molly and Mamie, Mitzi and Masha, Marisol and Marianne.
