Joplin
American composer and pianist Scott Joplin was born on November 24, 1868 in Texas. Dubbed the “King of Ragtime”, Joplin’s creations were a hallmark of the late 19th and early 20th century. To this day, Joplin is one of the most influential Black composers in history.
Joplin is of English origin meaning “son of Job”, referring to the Biblical figure. The surname Joplin is a double musical reference — in addition to Scott, there was of course rock and roll sensation Janis Joplin.
In recent years, a handful of baby girls have been given the name Joplin. The name has that jazzy, musical vibe, as well as that beloved “-lin” ending signature to so many girl’s names of this era. However, Joplin would work perfectly well for a boy.
