Django:
Musician Django Reinhardt was born on January 23, 1910 in Belgium. The jazz guitarist and composer was born Jean Reinhardt but went by the Romani nickname Django.
Django was one of the first major jazz musicians to rise to fame in Europe, with his works majorly influencing the world of jazz as well as the art of guitar to this day.
Reinhardt was of Manouche Romani descent himself — a subgroup of Romani people who have lived in France dating back as far as the 18th century. In Romani, Django means “I awake”, and is pronounced with a silent D.
Today many peoples’ association with the name Django is not that of the jazz musician, but is instead tied to the Quentin Tarantino film Django Unchained. In the 2012 film, the protagonist Django is given his name by his former enslavers.
In 2022, only 5 baby boys were given this lively and unique name.
