Happy Leap Day!
To celebrate this occasion that comes around only once every four years, I thought it fitting to feature the name Tallulah, meaning “leaping waters”.
Tallulah comes from the Choctaw language spoken by the Native American tribe originally based in the Southeastern Woodlands in what today is Alabama, Mississippi, and surrounding areas.
Fittingly there is a series of waterfalls in Georgia, along with a surrounding town, named Tallulah Falls.
With a sound as lively and bouncy as its meaning, it is no wonder that Tallulah is now quite literally JUST outside the US Top 1000, ranking #1004 in 2022.
Add in the distinct double L sound found in so many stylish girl’s names today (Delilah, Lily and all her variants, Luella, Lola, Layla, etc.) and you’ve got a winner.
There are various alternative spelling used frequently as well. Spelled Talulla, the name is an Anglicization of the Gaelic Tuilelaith, meaning “lady of abundance”. Tallula, Talullah, Talula, and Talulah were all given to a dozen or more baby girls last year as well.
