Levi Strauss was born on February 26, 1829 in Germany.
Levi founded the first ever company — Levi Strauss and Co. — to manufacture blue denim jeans. Levi’s novel pant design incorporated rivets to reinforce their structure and hold up better for manual labor work like construction.
Today Levi’s jeans are still the most popular brand of jeans worldwide, and not just for construction workers.
Strauss was born to Jewish parents, which is reflected through his Hebrew name associated with Leah and Jacob’s third son in the Old Testament. Levi was also the name of Matthew in the New Testament before he became an apostle.
It is suspected that Levi derives from the Hebrew word yillaweh, meaning “he will join”.
While Levi has always been used in some numbers by Jewish and Christian parents alike, today the name is the coolest it has ever been, ranking as high as #12 in the US.
Along with a plethora of other vowel-heavy vintage boy names like Leo and Eli, Levi feels grounded and approachable, combining a modern sound with traditional roots.
