Matilda
German, "battle-mighty"
If ever there was a name embodying feminine strength, Matilda is it. From Germanic roots meaning “battle-mighty”, it was much-used in medieval Europe, and belonged to a claimant to the English throne, Empress Matilda of Anjou. Its revival in the nineteenth century gives it a vintage feel today. You might associate it with Roald Dahl’s book-loving heroine, or the Australian song Waltzing Matilda, or the “Matilda Effect” – where male scientists are given credit for the female colleagues’ work – named after activist Matilda Joslyn Gage.
Glorious in its full form, Matilda also has sweet nicknames including Tilly, Tilda, and Mattie – or even the medieval form, Maud. A longstanding favorite in Australia, New Zealand and the UK, it is finally starting to make a comeback in the US too.
