On June 3, 1906, Josephine Baker was born, later becoming an international entertainment icon and civil rights activist. There are still twice as many babies named Joseph as Josephine, but Josephine is by far the most popular feminine variation of the classic Biblical name. Now Number 56, it’s been heading up the charts since the late 1980s. Jo and Josie are adorable nicknames, and we’ve heard Fifi too.

My great aunt was named Josephine and her nickname was Phine (fee-nee) which I have always loved
We chose Josephine for my daughter’s middle name. She was named after Jo March.
