Floris
Dutch, "flowering, flourishing"
If you love gentle yet sophisticated names, along with those rare floral choices for boys then this might be one for you!
Sleek and elegant, Floris is a stylish Dutch name that blends handsome, arty flair with the whimsy of spring blooms. Ultimately from the Latin florens, it's a relative of Florence and Florian, meaning "prosperous, flowering, flourishing".
It's a favorite in the Netherlands where it has been in the Top 50 since 2008, while a recent count saw it rank at #24 — higher than ever before. Occasionally used in France, in Belgium it ticks the box as a familiar but not overused choice, charting just outside the Top 100.
While the name is rare in English speaking countries, it may recognizable thanks to the long running fragrance company, Floris of London. Considered a prestigious and high-end brand, Floris has been worn by Marilyn Monroe, Mary Shelley, Beau Brummell and the British royal family.
Floris was kindly suggested by Nameberry Reader Suzanne, who recently chose it for her son!
