Cinder
English word name, "ashes, partly burnt coals"
Cinder is a sparky little name that’s ultra-rare in real life, but one of the most popular names on Nameberry this year. While website clicks don’t always predict real life trends, they do at least show that Cinder is on the radar of people thinking about names. Even if they’re not naming children yet, it could be a slow burner (excuse the pun) that has its moment in a decade or so.
Cinder has lots of appeal as a fiery word name, and feels like a successor to Ember, which has gone mainstream. You could also see it as an updated version of Cindy or Cynthia.
It’s a playful nod to Cinderella, without being overly frilly — the name equivalent of Disneybounding rather than dressing in the full ballgown. It’s used as such in Marissa Meyer’s Lunar Chronicles, where Cinder is a Cinderella-inspired cyborg mechanic.
