Bayard
French, "russet-haired"
Civil rights leader Bayard Rustin died on August 24, 1987. Bayard is a unique (literally: no babies were named Bayard in the US last year) name connected to two larger-than-life figures: a medieval knight and a magical horse. Pierre Terrail, Chevalier de Bayard, was a French knight known as being “without fear and beyond reproach”. The knight was real, but the magical horse is legendary. While bayard is used as a term for a reddish-brown horse with black mane and tail, the mythical Bayard is still celebrated by festivals in northern France and Belgium. Bayard is one of the few names for redheads that don’t start with the letter R.
