On this day in 1932, Amelia Earhart left Newfoundland to become the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic. Earhart’s accomplishments and bravery make her a feminist role model, which can take some of the credit for the name’s widespread popularity. Its similarity to the long-popular Emma and Emily help too. Bouncing from #4 to #3 in the latest statistics, Amelia is one of the top girl’s names today not only in the US but throughout the Western world.
